Get Checked, Give Sight

The importance of having your child's eyes checked will go a long way in giving them a good life. If your child’s poor vision is detected early (below the age of 10 years old), it can still be improved which will make your child to be less restricted in later years of life. Mr Chen Ren Cheet, the optometrist of Focus Point Tesco Penang has some comprehensive idea on why your child should get checked.

Unknown to most people 70% of yours kids mental development is associated with the eyes. Like what child psychologist believe is that every child is born with a blank state of mind, painted daily with colors and experiences that shape their future thinking and mental development. Unfortunately, there is approximately 10-30% population is being deprived of this, by having poor vision.

Lazy eye or amblyopia in medical terms loosely means inability for the eye to see normally even after wearing corrective spectacle prescription or surgery. Even though your children have eyes, it does not guarantee your children will have good eyesight. And when they do not have good eyesight, children will overlook a lot of things in life. A lot of the lazy eye cases (close to 90%) are one sided (unilateral) which can easily go undetected. In such cases most parents will argue “my kids can see”. This is true enough but when the good eye is covered the child response will be “I cannot see clearly”. If your child’s poor vision is detected early (below the age of 10 years old), it can still be improved which will make your child to be less restricted in later years of life.

To prevent recurrence of such tragedy, it’s advisable to send your children to be checked by qualified eye care practitioner. The child’s risk of poor vision will be greater if they have squint (cross eye), severe nearsightedness or farsightedness or astigmatism, unequal vision, low birth weight or premature birth, trauma near the eye, droopy/over tight eye lids or blood relatives that have any of the above. If they have any prescription, it is advisable that the child wear their prescription all the time.

But on certain conditions, wearing glasses alone may not be enough to restore a child’s eye sight to normal. The child may need to undergo some special “eye exercises” or “eye training” over a period of time, to improve their sight. When the child has better eye sight, they will naturally, be more attentive thus learn faster. Another plus side to this is that when we remove the strain of poor eye sight, the child would also be more cheerful, responsive and intelligent.
